Granite countertops are exactly what their name implies. They’re 100% natural rock with nothing added. Removed from quarries around the world as large blocks, they’re then sliced into sheets and custom cut to size.
This material is an igneous rock which means it was once liquid magma or lava which cooled over time and solidified to form solid rock. Every single slab is unique and it can never be replicated , therefore if granite is your choice of kitchen worktop surface you can rest assure that is one of a kind!
Natural stone surfaces such as granite have long been a popular choice when it comes to beautiful and traditional interior design, coming in hundreds of variations in colour, tone and pattern, this material is one of the most versatile of natural stones because it not only performs well practically in daily use, but also because of its stunning aesthetics .
Granite is traditionally more prevalent choice as material for kitchen counter tops than marble, and is slightly less porous, generally requiring sealing once a year. It is also harder than marble. However, as a natural product quarried from the earth, its strength and structural integrity can vary, with some slabs more susceptible to damage than others due to hidden fissures and flaws. Each slab is unique and can vary in appearance.
Maintenance
It is advisable that Granite surfaces are regularly cleaned with soapy water or mild detergent and a soft sponge or cloth. Then surface should be rinsed with clean water and polished with a soft cloth for a nice and shiny look.
Granite Maintainace Kits are readily available off the shelf. We recommend resealing your worktops once a year .
Cleaning detergents containing bleach , chlorine, hard chemicles, acids, alkalis or concentrated disinfectants could cause damage and should not be used on Granite surfaces. If any of these come into contact with the stone, they have to be cleaned/ rinsed off immediately, in order to avoid potential damage and discolouration.
Standing and sitting as well as putting pressure / heavy weights on the worktop surface can cause damage and should be avoided at all times. Extra caution must be taken with the areas , where the joints and cut outs are positioned ( around the sink, hob, etc)
Granite is a natural stone and it is heat resistant up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While extended contact with high temperatures can still cause some damage, a well maintained countertop should not be affected by an occasional hot item or short-term exposure to high temperatures. Please take pre-caution if the worktop is exposed to very high temperature for prolonged period of time. It is recommended to always use chopping boards and never cut directly onto the stone surfaces.
Over time, natural stone surfaces (Marble and Granite) may begin to weather and naturally loose their initial appearance. We highly recommend resealing your worktops every 6months, which should also prevent any potential staining.
